Amritsar is most famous for being  the home of the Golden Temple, the most sacred shrine in Sikhism. It is a major pilgrimage destination for Sikhs from all over the world, but is most welcoming to non Sikh visitors. Although tiny in comparison, it would rank with the Taj Mahal in the feeling it gives of being a very special place. It is very much a living temple, with devotional and sacred rites ongoing from early morning until late evening. It is also very beautiful, much more so than I imagined from photographs I had seen of it. Pictures just cannot capture the atmosphere, or the feeling of it being such a spiritual and special place.
