Over the last few years, I have been privileged to get to know Mick Murphy, also known as 'The Iron Man' because of the strict and harsh training regime he imposed upon himself in his efforts to get fit for the 1958 Ras Tailteann. For six months before the race, he lived alone in a lair in a wood, training late into the night with homemade weights, and eating raw meat because 'Jack Dempsey did it', and drinking cows blood, because 'the Masai warriors in Africa did it'. This was something he repeated on three occasions during the race itself, which he won at his first attempt.
